What were you born to do? Create? Write? Dance? Inspire?
Nick Sambrato, owner of Mama’s Sauce, was born to print.
I had the great opportunity to cross paths again with this talented individual at Creative Mornings, a breakfast lecture series for the creative community that takes place in cities all over the world. This one took place in Orlando.
When I walked through the doors to enter Credo Conduit’s coworking space, I was met with hot Credo coffee and a fill-in-the-blank name badge that read: “Something I discovered by accident was…”
I thought, well, heck – I have no clue. Then it hit me. Love. Yes, love in its truest form is something I discovered by accident.
While making my coffee, I snapped a quick photo of the mug and created the obligatory Instagram post, and then the morning catch-ups began. Talking with friends and meeting new people is what Creative Mornings is all about.
Soon we all took our seats and Nick began to speak. He looks like a creative. He’s got a big scruffy beard, and wore a faded black shirt that read “Born to Print” on the chest. For a moment, I got a little distracted by the words and started to ask myself what I was born to do.
I think it’s an important question for everyone to ask themselves, but let’s stay focused.
Nick’s talk was all about serendipity – a fortunate happenstance or pleasant surprise.
He walked us through his life’s journey from a child building computers, to an adult printing posters for bands, to years later owning one of the world’s most celebrated hand printing shops called Mama’s Sauce, located in Orlando.
Along Nick’s journey, serendipity fueled his success. Forging beautiful relationships with one person after another and saying yes to really challenging opportunities all laid the foundation for what he and his team have today.
Without going into the nitty gritty, I’d like to leave you with a few key statements he said that stuck with me:
- Good things can happen when you say yes.
- Say yes to things you don’t know how to do.
- Focus on the things that really light you up. Get rid of distractions.
- Live in the now.
- Show only the work you want to be known for.
Until next time, stay learning and growing to better your craft, while exploring a little precious time away from your desk.
