On this week’s Florida NewsMakers program, State University System Chancellor Frank Brogan sits down with Sachs Media Group’s Trimmel Gomes for an exclusive interview about Governor Rick Scott’s decision to veto a 3 percent tuition hike for Florida’s colleges and universities.
The tuition increase would have raised $18.5 million for universities. “I think if you asked each university, they would tell you that they would have liked the opportunity to talk about it and see if in fact they felt it was right for their institution,” Brogan said. But the Governor’s decision came as no surprise. “I think anyone who has been around and paying attention, knows exactly how Governor Scott feels about the issue of rising tuition. It’s a concern to be respected,” Brogan tells Gomes. “But I also have to credit Speaker Will Weatherford (and) President Don Gaetz, because they also understand the rising need for the resources to be able to operate what is the second-largest state university system in the United States.” During this week’s program Chancellor Brogan also explains why despite the tuition veto this was still a remarkable legislative session for the university system.
